About the Rhodes University Archive Collection

The Margaret Smith Library at the South African Institute for Biodiversity (SAIAB)  housed 300 document boxes (approx.30 inear metres) of administrative and correspondence files from the Rhodes University Department of Ichthyology (1946-1980) and the JLB Smith Institute of Ichthyology (1980-1999). Historically, material was stored at the  Margaret Smith Library as Rhodes University lacked a formal Archive.

The Mellon Foundation-funded History of Rhodes Project began in 2013, with Rhodes University Archive being formally established during 2014. The Archive is housed within the Cory Library space, but is a discrete entity.

We have recently (April 2015) transferred these boxes to RUA. Inventories and finding aids are being compiled.
