MACW: Masters in Creative Writing: New Student FAQs

Guide to useful Library resources and services for students doing the MA in Creative Writing.

Do I need my Student Card when I come to the Library?

Your Student Card identifies you as a Rhodes University student!!

You will need your Student Card to:

  • get into the Library
  • borrow books from the library
  • pay for photocopying

YOUR STUDENT CARD = YOUR ACCESS CARD = YOUR LIBRARY CARD = YOUR PHOTOCOPY CARD

Look after your student card!  If you lose your card, report the loss immediately to the Loans Desk staff so that they can prevent anyone else from using it to take out books in your name.

How do I borrow a book?

Take the book, together with your student card, to the Loans Desk and the staff on duty will issue it to you.  The date by when it must be returned will be stamped on the date sheet at the back of the book.

Postgraduates may borrow up to 20 books for 8 weeks

How do I renew my books?

EITHER:
Renew the loans yourself online
OR
Take the book and your student card to the Loans Desk and ask for the book to be renewed.

Note: You may renew your book loans up to three times except if another library user has reserved the book.

How do I return my books?

Books should be returned to the Loans Desk on or before the date stamped on the date slip at the back of the book.

Books may also be returned via the Book Returns Chute to the left of the front entrance.  This facility may be used when the Library is closed or if there is a long queue at the Loans Desk.

Important: Short Loan books should be returned to Short Loan.

Will I be fined if I return books after the due date?

Yes!!!!  We have to ensure that our books are equally available to all.

Library users who return their books after the due date will be fined:

  • Open shelf books: 50c per day
  • Short Loan books: R1 for every hour overdue

If you do not return a book at all, a replacement cost will be charged to your student account.

May I borrow journals?

The print journals to which we no longer subscribe are housed in title alphabetical order in the Periodicals Store on Level 1.

Print journals to which we currently subscribe are shelved according to subject on Levels 2, 3 and 4.

Bound journals may be borrowed for a 2 day loan period. Unbound journals must be read in the Library.
