What are Open Education Resources (OERs)?

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.

OER (Open Educational Resources) are any type of educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open licence. The nature of these open materials means that anyone can legally and freely copy, use, adapt and re-share them (UNESCO. (2012). 2012 Paris OER Declaration. Paris: UNESCO.

OER can include but are not limited to textbooks, syllabi, lecture notes, readings, assignments, and tests.

Open licences allow OER to be re-distributed and re-used without fees or the need to seek permission from the rights-holder.
