The National Curriculum Statement  documents Grades R-12 (NCS) stipulates policy on curriculum and assessment in the schooling sector. To improve implementation, the National Curriculum Statement was amended, with the amendments coming into effect in January 2012. A single comprehensive Curriculum and Assessment Policy document was developed for each subject to replace Subject Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines in Grades R-12.

Foundation Phase teachers help children develop a strong educational base and a love of learning. This includes teaching children to read and write and supporting them in developing their numeracy skills.

 Teachers play a significant role in the upliftment and transformation of our  society. They bear the weight and responsibility of teaching, and, apart from parents, are the main source of knowledge and values for children.

As a teacher, you are expected to:

• acknowledge the noble calling of your profession to educate and train the learners of our country;
• acknowledge that the attitude, dedication, self-discipline, ideals, training and conduct of the teaching profession determine the quality of education in this country;
• acknowledge, uphold and promote basic human rights, as embodied in the Constitution of South Africa;
• commit yourself therefore to do all within your power, in the exercising of your professional duties, to act in accordance with the ideals of your profession, as expressed in the SACE Code of Professional  Ethics; and
• act in a proper and becoming way such that your behavior does not bring the teaching profession into disrepute.

The Department of Basic Education is working hard to address  multiple and complex challenges that the education sector faces. The Department  also looks forward  to strengthening its support for teachers.
